I decided to observe people in the Commons dining hall. In the commons there are a few main food sections, with tables and dining areas on both sides of the room. I noticed that many people are often there for longer than 30 minutes. Many people eat in large groups and then stay for 15-20 minutes after they finish eating. It seems to me that many people go in large groups and stay for a while because it is their time to unwind and catch up with each other about the day. It is a time where they can relax and somewhat forget about the stresses of schoolwork. I also noticed however that even though students eat in groups, they often spend a lot of time on their phones and social media. It seems like they are curious as to what is happening in places that they are not. Perhaps this is due to the fact that as teenagers we are naturally curious as to what other people we know are doing, or maybe it has just become a habit of our generation to check our social media. Whether students are talking to those around them, or they are talking to people through their phones, the Commons seems to be a place to not only eat, but socialize as well.
